Parkinson’s Disease
DBS helps improve movement symptoms like slowness, stiffness, tremor, walking issues, and involuntary movements. For most Parkinson’s patients, the main benefit isn't tremor control but the ability to reduce medication.
Essential Tremor
DBS can improve arm tremors significantly (often over 80%) and midline tremors (around 50%), leading to better daily function like eating, writing, and drinking—often with less or no need for tremor medication
Dystonia
DBS can help with both generalized and focal dystonia, easing abnormal movements and pain. It can improve daily activities like eating and driving, reduce reliance on medication and injections, and enhance quality of life over time.
The DBS Process
If DBS is being considered, a workup is needed to assess whether you are suitable to have this treatment. For example, we need to assess whether your condition will respond to DBS, and if so, which brain target we should implant to best suit your needs.

Admitted on surgery day and kept on medicines, patients undergo general anesthesia with minimal shave and 2 mm skull holes while Mr Pereira uses imaging to guide electrode placement.
Post-op, patients see a neurologist every 1–4 weeks to titrate low-level stimulation—leveraging the transient stun effect—with most adjustments by six weeks, and receive a personal DBS controller.
Patients typically resume driving and work after 6–8 weeks once recovered, defer major decisions in that period, and must avoid head contact, unshielded MRIs, arc welding, and scuba diving with a DBS implant.
